Risking the Ocean Beneath Us
Yvette James
Concrete, honey, steel, basalt, sump oil, silver
EXHIBITED: MADA NOW Graduate Exhibition, Monash University (2018), DEBUT XV, BLINDSIDE (2019), Hatched: National Graduate Exhibition, PICA (2019)
Acute awareness of one’s physicality produces unease, a reminder that our sentience is contained inside finite matter.
The artwork dictates the space, creating tension between body and work. A rupture in emotion, each element creates unrest- through danger, through instability, through abjection. The viewer orbits each element, fluctuating between threat and curiosity, finding themselves in psychological oscillation.
